PACU Celebrates 77th ICU Day® with Shred Day, Fraud Seminar and Community Engagement

Today marks the 77th year that credit unions around the globe have celebrated International Credit Union Day®, and PACU was no exception!
ICU Day® highlights the importance of credit unions and all the good work we do for our members and communities.
This year’s theme, “Cooperation for a Prosperous World,” highlights how credit unions—being non-profit cooperatives- at their core, are designed to collaborate and work together.
In the spirit of cooperation, PACU decided to host a shred day at our Advantage Way branch for anyone to come and bring up to two boxes’ worth of sensitive documents, not to mention delicious lemonade and coffee to enjoy while waiting to shred their documents.
While each PACU branch offered complimentary refreshments and giveaways, our University branch also hosted a Fraud Prevention seminar, because ICU Day® also reflects PACU’s commitment to service and security.
The Fraud Prevention seminar was held by PACU’s very own Sandi Richardson and Stephanie Surratt, who gave the attending members an in-depth look into tactics fraudsters use to gain access to the personal and financial information.
“Arming our members with the know-how to prevent becoming victims of fraud is crucial,” Sandi said. “Unfortunately, fraud is becoming increasingly prevalent, so the more information our members have to stay vigilant, the better chance they have of keeping their money safe.”
Fighting against fraud is one of the many necessary services we provide to our members. And being the trusted financial partner our members need is what ICU Day® is all about.
PACU President & CEO Dion Williams explains that PACU wanted to celebrate its members in a way that protects what matters most while still making those personal connections.
“Secure shredding helps prevent identity theft,” Dion said. “The Fraud Prevention Seminar, led by our resident expert Sandi Richardson, offered practical, easy-to-apply tips for staying safe in a digital world. Both efforts underscore that belonging means looking out for one another’s financial well-being and providing opportunities for members and teammates to have honest conversations about staying financially confident.”
Which is what we hope our members got out of our events today. ICU Day® has been a tradition since 1948, and we hope to continue the celebration for many years.
“Cooperation and community never go out of style,” Dion shared. “This year’s global theme, ‘Cooperation for a Prosperous World,’ was fully displayed here at PACU. Our members, volunteers and employees came together to celebrate what makes credit unions different. We’re built on trust, shared purpose and people helping people. That spirit still drives everything we do.”

As technology gets more sophisticated and fraudsters find new ways to try to steal your identity and hack into your accounts, it’s increasingly important to check your accounts regularly and report any suspicious activity as soon as possible.
